WINTER WONDERS[2]

With December upon us, it seems fitting that this month’s theme is “Winter Wonders.” Nearly twenty years ago, Hallmark released the movie, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year. Filmed in Vancouver and the surrounding areas of Langley and Burnaby, winter wonders abound in Canada, with heavy to little snowfall throughout the country.

Burnaby is home to many parks, the ten-acre Burnaby Village Museum, and the “Hollywood North” film studio. Chinese immigrants were critical to the early infrastructure. Asia-Pacific connections remain strong with the sister cities of Kushiro, Japan and Hwaseong, South Korea. Burnaby Mountain Park is home to many trails, black tail deer, bald eagles, bears, cougars, and wooden poles carved by artisans from Japan. Snowfall is common in December, especially at Simon Fraser University atop Burnaby Mountain.

Langley is home to a large equestrian community, including the Thunderbird Show Park, one of north America’s premier equestrian facilities. Situated on 85 acres, it hosts a variety of competitions, along with training, boarding, a fully heated tack room, and heated grooming areas. Unlike the premier ski town of Revelstoke, Canada, Langley gets very little snowfall and winter temperatures rarely fall below freezing.

Revelstoke is approximately five and a half hours from Langley. Often referred to as a “snow forest” with more than thirty feet of annual snowfall, it received the 2025 Gold Award in the best Ski Resort for Powder category from the Snomad Ski Resort Awards.
