DAILY DIFFERENCE[2]
From bus drivers to custodians, individuals who provide essential services make a daily difference. There are multiple stories to share, but only a few are included here.
A South Carolina custodian and a Tennessee bus driver were recently recognized for their influence. Don Allen of Mallie County, Bradford, Tennessee, was invited to attend Mallie Courtney’s kindergarten graduation party. Referred to by Mallie as “Mr. Don”, he and Mallie have shared a special bond each day as she rides to and from school. Mallie’s aunt captured a video of Mr. Don and Mallie at the party. After posting the video, many posted memories of their influential bus driver. As Mallie’s aunt said, “Genuine people still are here and want to impact children’s lives and even older people’s lives…there is still good.”
Speaking of good, students at Cannons Elementary School in Spartanburg, South Carolina held a “Punzel Birthday Parade” in April to honor the 80th birthday of long-time custodian Punzel Frenanders. Punzel began working for the school in 1987 and now serves as Head of Custodial Services. Students wore special t-shirts and made handmade signs and birthday cards to recognize the longtime custodian who “keeps the facility spotless.” Although many would have long ago chosen retirement, Punzel has no plans for retirement.
At Castle Rock Middle School, the PTO made a sign for their custodians: “Thanks for making our school sparkle. We’d be a mess without you.” Lynchburg City Schools initiated the Custodial School of Distinction Awards in 2023, recognizing those who foster clean and safe school environments. During the inaugural event, LCS Deputy Superintendent Reid Wodicka said, “Maintaining stellar facilities where students and staff members can thrive is an important part of our mission.”
THIS WEEK’S ACTIVITY
Take the time to reflect on the difference a past or current custodian or bus driver has made in your life or the life of a child, niece, nephew, or someone else in your community. Encourage students to write notes of appreciation to a bus driver or custodian.
