FOR THE LOVE OF VETERANS

FOR THE LOVE OF VETERANS[2]

Although I am not from a military family, I was raised to honor and be grateful for military veterans. Having learned more about military service during the past few decades, I am also grateful for the friends and family of military veterans. Without their unwavering support and often frequent moves, we would not have the freedom we have today. As John Doolittle said, “American veterans have served their country with the belief that democracy and freedom are ideals to be upheld around the world.”

For those unfamiliar with John, he is a retired Navy SEAL Captain. John was raised in Walnut Grove, California. He and his family lived in Tehran in late 1978, the beginning of the Iranian revolution. Fourteen years later, he graduated from the Air Force Academy and eventually spent over two decades as a Navy SEAL.

Formerly known as Armistice Day, November 11 became known as Veterans Day in 1954 following the end of the Korean War to honor all veterans. Veterans Day is sometimes considered related to Remembrance Day or what is occasionally called Poppy Day, honoring the sacrifices of the living and dead who served in the armed forces. Remembrance Day is primarily observed in Commonwealth member states.

THIS WEEK’S ACTIVITY

How many words can be formed using the letters in “Veterans Day” and “Remembrance Day?” Do the words you form represent how you, a child, a parent, or a student view Veterans Day? If a neighbor or friend is a veteran or there is a veteran’s home in your area, write a special note using two of the words you formed.
